Phone Company Bugged
Calls
Deutsche Telekom, the largest telecom corporation in Europe, admitted
it employed an outside company to monitor hundreds of thousands calls
made by its senior executives, as well as journalists, from 2005-2006.
It kept track of people who made calls and received calls as well as the
times calls were placed and how long they lasted.
The company, however, said it never listened in on conversations. The
projects, dubbed as Operation Clipper and Operation
Rheingold, were introduced to help identify which workers were responsible
for sending private financial data to certain journalists.
CEO Rene Obermann was not in command when the spying occurred and said
that the case is currently undergoing investigation.
