SIA on the Back Foot Again

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) - now with Dr Bernard Herdan CB as interim Chief Executive - is busy defending itself again this week - this time against an 'inaccurate' attack upon its procedures by a Press Association journalist.

Among other things, the PA article suggests that '1,350 illegal immigrants have slipped through vetting checks for sensitive security jobs' and that despite being criticised the SIA has 'rewarded top managers with nearly £50,000 in bonus payments'. It also states that 'The National Audit Office has condemned the body for going £17m over budget.'

The SIA response (see below) starts with the comment : 'The report on PA is inaccurate. The facts are misrepresented despite Press Association being provided with a statement and full explanation. ' However, it does not refute all the claims made in the article.

Meanwhile, the SIA has set out its stall with a report on recent achievements, and it is unfortunate that this has been overshadowed by the above. The figures released by the SIA show the mountain they have been required to climb, and generally show that targets have been reached.

Combined, these two stories appear to show that the SIA is doing its job but it is failing to get that message across to the media, which has latched on to the belief that the industry body is incompetent.
